How do I start an association?
1. Make a decision
If you want to found a club, you need at least two people. They must agree on common goals and rules. These rules are called statutes.
2. Establishment (construction)
Two people agree on the club rules (statutes).
That is the founding agreement.
Companies or other associations can also co-found.
You don't have to be an Austrian citizen.
3. Register a club
The founders register the association with the association authority (in Graz, e.g. with the Styrian State Police Directorate).
The statutes must be sent along with it.
The authority has 6 weeks to reject the association.
If there is no negative response, the association is officially founded after 6 weeks (often earlier).
The authority then sends the valid statutes and a free extract from the register of associations.
4. Appoint representatives
Once founded, you have 1 year to name official representatives of the association (e.g. chairwoman/chairman). They represent the association externally.
5. Report changes
You must report changes (e.g. to persons or statutes) to the authorities within 4 weeks.
6. Statutes — the rules of association
The statutes are like a contract. They must be written in German and must govern:
Name and goal of the association
How the association is organized
What are the duties of the members
A club needs at least:
A general meeting (at least every 5 years)
A management body (at least 2 people, e.g. chairperson)
Two auditors who check the money
7. Costs (as of 2022)
Notification of foundation: €14,30
Supplement to the statutes: €3.90 per sheet (max. €21.80)
-
Invitation to take up employment (optional):
Positive: €6.50
Negative: free
You pay the fees when you receive the payment slip.
